- MUFON SLIDE SET NARRATIVE
-
- 1. We live in a vast universe. Astronomers estimate that,
- beginning 10 to 20 billion years ago, at least 100 million
- galaxies formed. Like our Milky Way, most have hundreds of
- billions of stars. Only a fraction, like the six here, have
- been catalogued.
-
- 2. Our sun is of modest size and age - about 4.6 billion years.
- Like all other stars, it is a nuclear furnace, transforming
- hydrogen into helium. Until confirmed by the Hubble space
- telescope and further explorations, we can only assume that the
- galactic dust which coalesced as planets around the sun was
- likewise a normal process for stars throughout the universe.
-
- 3. Mars, the fourth planet in our solar system, is in major
- respects like Earth. While it has only one-tenth of our
- planet's total mass, it has an atmosphere comprising the same
- gasses, but in a different mix. Mars has polar caps and
- seasonal changes and once volcanically active. Unlike Earth and
- the second planet Venus, Mars is devoid of carbon, an essential
- for human life. But, it does contain all the other basic
- minerals.
-
- Given the sameness by which galaxies, individual stars and their
- presumed planets came about, is it so difficult to assume that
- life forms inevitably spawned and in some places evolved into
- intelligent beings? The famed Carl Sagan calculated that
- perhaps a million such intelligences evolved in the Milky Way
- alone.
-
- 4. Among the myriad celestial bodies in our night sky, one in
- particular is routinely responsible for false UFO reports.
- Shown here below the moon, Venus at its greatest magnitude is
- brighter than every other star or planet, equivalent to the
- brightness of a quarter moon.
-
- 5. Meteors are likewise commonly mistaken as anomalies. During
- annual meteor showers, dozens per hour may be viewed at night.
- Larger bolide meteors like this one are visible at any hour.
- Similar in appearance to a bolide is the reentering debris of
- previous space launches. Several thousand pieces of metal orbit
- the planet and will fall through the atmosphere with ever
- increasing frequency.
-
- 6. Another routine type of mis-identification involves
- conventional aircraft. The headlights of an approaching
- airplane tend to obscure its wings and may appear to hover
- momentarily.
-
- 7. Whereas honest mistakes have occurred in great numbers,
- fraudulent UFO reports, when publicized, make lasting
- impressions on the public. This is a small model suspended in
- front of the camera.
-
- 8. A flying peanut butter lid. Hubcaps and frisbees have also
- been tried. Computer photo analysis readily exposes this type
- of filmed hoax as well as double exposures.
-
- Over four decades, persons dedicated to determining the truth
- have waded through the mistakes and fakes to find the genuine
- UFO incidents. Those most active in recent years include the
- following:
-
- 9. Retired engineering executive Walter Andrus founded MUFON,
- the Mutual UFO Network, Inc., in 1969. As International
- Director, he has built the world's largest civilian organization
- studying UFO events. MUFON now encompasses 2,500 members in
- fifty countries. Scores of behavioral and physical scientists,
- medical professionals, engineers and other experts are utilized
- to resolve individual claims and conduct research on the
- purposes behind UFO phenomena.
-
- 10. Dan Wright is MUFON's Deputy Director in charge of
- investigations. He is responsible for the preparedness of
- investigators and for evaluating their completed UFO case
- reports. Under his direction, many thousands of existing case
- records are being computerized for purposes of comparative
- analysis.
-
- 11. Optical physicist Dr. Bruce Maccabee has evaluated hundreds
- of photographs, films and videotapes, using high-tech equipment
- and advanced techniques. He is regarded as the world's foremost
- expert on UFO photographic evidence.
-
- 12. Author and lecturer Antonio Huneeus at a claimed landing
- site in Queens, New York. A Chilean native, he is MUFON's
- Continental Coordinator for South America and has surfaced many
- solid cases from countries around the world.
-
- 13. Budd Hopkins specializes in cases of physical abduction by
- nonhuman beings. His two best selling books, Missing Time and
- Intruders, document the effects on what are now believed to be
- many thousands of human subjects. He has established a network
- of medical and psychology professionals to handle abduction
- cases.
-
- 14. Nuclear physicist and lecturer Stanton Friedman has
- verified a decades line effort by the U.S. Government to cover
- up its extensive involvement in UFO matters. Documents dating
- from 1947 to the present implicate many agencies and highly
- placed officials in secret UFO research. National security
- aside, MUFON contends the public has a right to know what our
- government has learned.
-
- 15. The late Dr. J. Allen Hynek, a renowned astronomer,
- assisted the U.S. Air Force for nearly 20 years in its UFO
- public relations effort titled Project Bluebook. Disgusted by
- the military's habit of discounting strong UFO reports, he wrote
- two books, The UFO Experience and The Hynek UFO Report to reveal
- the truth about the subject.
-
- Dr. Hynek divided UFO sightings into six groupings: (1) distant
- nocturnal lights with unusual characteristics or behavior; (2)
- unconventional objects seen at a distance during daylight; (3)
- radar tracks combined with visual sightings; (4) close
- encounters of the first kind, observations within roughly 500
- feet; (5) close encounters of the second kind, involving
- landings or other physical effects on the environment or
- witness; and (6) observations of nonhuman entities within or
- outside the craft - close encounters of the third kind.
-
- Over four decades, people in every type of locale and of all
- social, economic, political and religious backgrounds have
- reported UFO sightings. The sampling to follow presents an
- international overview.
-
- 16. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Trent of McMinnville, Oregon photographed
- this vehicle twice as it flew neat their home at 7:45 AM, May
- 11, 1950. After analysis, the photos of the silent
- silvery object were reported to Project Bluebook by a
- professional astronomer with the following pertinent comment:
- "...all factors investigated... appear to be consistent with the
- assertion that an extraordinary flying object... flew within
- sight of the witnesses."
-
- 17. Later photometric images of the McMinnville disc. No
- wires, supports or evidence of double exposure were evident.
- This is one of 700 cases for which Bluebook had no explanation,
- yet chose to ignore in its final report in 1969.
-
- 18. This collage of photos was taken in Belgium on May 7, 1955.
- The gentleman stated that the object produced a vapor trail,
- passed behind it, then back out.
-
- 19. On January 16, 1958, the ship's photographer aboard a
- Brazilian scientific vessel was called to the deck to take this
- shot, which includes a superimposed enlargement. The
- saturn-shaped vehicle approached the ship near the island of
- Trinidad, then moved back out to sea.
-
- 20. Highway traffic engineer Rex Hefflin twice photographed
- this disc on August 3, 1965, from inside his truck near Santa
- Ana, California. A Project Bluebook coordinator declared them
- to be "among the top four or five examples of photographic
- evidence of the existence of UFO's." That appraisal was ignored
- by his Bluebook superiors.
-
- 21. A pattern found in UFO research pertains to the effects on
- ground vegetation where an unconventional craft has landed.
- This site was discovered near Tully, Queensland, Australia on
- January 26, 1966, following the observation of a spinning disc
- by many residents over the town.
-
- 22. On the morning of February 7, 1969, hundreds of witnesses
- observed the vehicle illustrated here, which proceeded to land
- near Pirassununga in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo.
- Electrical power and telephone interruptions occurred throughout
- the area during its presence.
-
- 23. These landing marks at the Pirassununga site were taken by
- the Brazilian Air Force. The closest witness, Tiago Machado,
- confronted small beings outside the craft and was injured by a
- light beam directed at him.
-
- 24. At the farm of Warren Barr near Van Horne, Iowa, two young
- women observed a spinning disc with an orange glow at low
- altitude on the night of July 13, 1969. Note a mark near the
- edge of the soybean field on the right of the frame.
-
- 25. The next morning, Mr Barr discovered this scorched area.
- Upon examination of the site, investigators found that the soil
- was greatly dehydrated, presumably from an intense heat
- generated by the UFO.
-
- 26. On November 2, 1971, Ronald Johnson of Delphos, Kansas
- witnessed a small, illuminated, rumbling object approach and
- hover momentarily near a sheep pen. As it departed with a
- high-pitched sound, he ran inside for his parents. They saw the
- vehicle in the distance, then discovered a highly reflective,
- 9-foot ring of whitish material which numbed their fingers. A
- laboratory later determined the material to be natural organisms
- stimulated by a high-energy source. The soil beneath the ring
- and nearby tree limbs were dehydrated in the aftermath.
-
- 27. This Spanish Air Force photograph was taken over Grand
- Canary Island on the night of June 22, 1976. The large luminous
- object was observed by hundreds of islanders.
-
- 28. GEPAN is a French acronym defining the Group for the Study
- of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena. The committee was established
- in 1977 as part of the National Center for Space Studies under
- the leadership of an acclaimed French astronomer who was
- impressed by the UFO cases _not_ explained by the U.S. Air Force
- Project Bluebook. This cover is from GEPAN's regular
- publication. France is unique among nations in that it
- officially recognizes the reality of UFOs.
-
- 29. In 1978 over the Amazon River, this object was photographed
- in daylight by the pilot of an airliner from within the cockpit.
- The photo was leaked without further details to a Brazilian UFO
- researcher.
-
- 30. Beginning in the 1970s, farmers in the southwest region of
- England have been finding mysterious swirled, circular
- depressions in their fields of wheat, barley and other grains.
- Whatever the source, the number of crop circles has escalated in
- recent years.
-
- 31. Meteorologists have discounted atmospheric phenomena as the
- cause. The only other possibility of a normal resolution would
- be human tampering. In this photo, the trail of an
- investigator who approached the site is evident. Numerous
- aerial photographs of pristine sites show no crop disturbance
- outside the circle.
-
- Measurements have determined that most crop circles are between
- 8 and 25 meters in diameter, though much larger ones have also
- been found. Curiously, the sites are not circular per Se, but
- rather slightly elliptical.
-
- 32. The crop is usually bent in a clockwise pattern, but
- sometimes counter-clockwise. Individual stalks are twisted
- together like a rope. Further, though irreversibly bent to the
- ground, the grain is not damaged and continues to grow
- horizontally. No depressions have been detected beneath the
- crop at any of the sites to indicate a vehicular landing.
-
- Two aspects are especially confounding. First is what has been
- called a "cookie cutter" effect. Unlike what the down-wash of a
- helicopter would produce, the grain immediately outside the
- circle is totally unaffected. Second are the black marks
- appearing on some photos as taken by various cameras.
-
- 33. In recent years, many of the circles were accompanied by
- an outer ring - or even double rings. The grain within the
- rings is often found flattened in the opposite direction.
- Further, geometric formations of circles have been produced,
- most notably likened to the five on a dice cube.
-
- It must be emphasized that, although a satisfactory explanation
- other than UFOs has not been offered, thus far no physical craft
- has been spotted in the vicinity of any English crop circle.
-
- 34. On July 1, 1983 a woman known by the pseudonym Kathy Davis
- discovered this scorch mark on the lawn at her home in
- Indianapolis, Indiana. Her discomforting feelings about the
- previous night eventually led her to abduction researcher
- Budd Hopkins. Under regressive hypnosis, it was learned that
- Kathy had been abducted on multiple occasions throughout her
- life. Her account became the focus of Hopkin's second book,
- Intruders.
-
- Following its publication, for years Kathy was badgered
- regularly at her home and work-place by black, unmarked military
- helicopters - presumably an effort by a government agency to
- harass her for unknown reasons. Other abduction subjects have
- reported similar helicopter harassment.
-
- 35. On October 4, 1986, a couple considering the purchase of a
- property near Schoolcraft, Michigan was walking the acreage when
- this site was discovered in a remote lowland area. The outer
- circle measured 17 1/2 feet in diameter. No human or vehicle
- tracks were found in the vicinity.
-
- 36. Home builder Ed Walters of Gulf Breeze, Florida, a suburb
- of Pensacola, took over 40 photos of anomalous aerial objects
- between November 11, 1987 and the 1st of May 1988. Initially
- using an old polaroid camera, he later employed a sealed
- multi-lens camera and finally two modern polaroids on a
- framework for stereo shots to verify that what he was filming was
- genuine.
-
- At 3:30 AM on December 2, 1987, Ed confronted a 4-foot entity at
- the rear deck of his home. He attempted to pursue the being but
- was frozen in his tracks by a blue beam. With help from his
- wife Frances, he freed himself, then took this shot of the craft
- and its beam after it retreated over a nearby field.
-
- 37. Two weeks later on December 17 at 1 AM several small
- figures encroached the Walters' bedroom. Ed was in a near
- blackout state as they left. Recovering, he went outside and
- took this shot of the object as it hovered 150 feet away. A
- computer technique called edge enhancement later determined that
- the pampas grass in the foreground is in the correct focus
- relative to the craft for the stated size and distance.
-
- 38. In the early evening of January 12, 1988, as Ed drove to a
- construction site, the same or a similar vehicle confronted him
- over a rural road. Partially immobilized by a beam of light, he
- took this shot through the windshield while the craft hovered
- over the road 180 feet ahead. The reflection on the pavement
- below the object permitted accurate measurements afterward.
-
- Extensive analysis of the various photos was conducted by Dr.
- Bruce Maccabee, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and a private lab
- hired by publisher William Morrow and Company. All were unable
- to detect evidence of a hoax in _any_ of the photographs by Ed
- and Frances Walters. Also noteworthy are the hundreds of other
- Pensacola area residents who witnessed anomalous objects during
- and after the Walters' episodes.
-
- 39. We are now in the fifth decade of what is called the modern
- UFO era. By far the most commonly observed type of
- unconventional vehicle has been the disc shape or, in the
- vernacular, flying saucer.
-
- 40. As seen in these two frames and twelve images total, there
- is quite a variety of discs. In that nonhuman entities are
- observed far less often than their ships, we are still in the
- process of placing particular occupants with every type of
- vehicle. That is fundamental to determining UFO purpose.
-
- 41. Sighted with some regularity are delta-winged crafts. A
- few of these shapes are, of course, remindful of the B-2 stealth
- bomber developed for the U.S. Air Force. Since delta-shaped
- UFOs have been reported for decades, one may question whether
- our designers chose that particular design for the B-2 "out of
- the blue."
-
- 42. Distinct shapes other than the disc and delta variety have
- also been seen close at hand. Among the most common is a
- red-orange or yellow-orange glowing sphere. Another is a
- metallic cylinder, often referred to by witnesses as cigar
- shaped. The size of some of these is estimated to dwarf a
- conventional jetliner.
-
- 43. Bigfoot is the American term for a legendary anthropoid
- also known as the yeti, abominable snowman, and sasquatch. It
- has generally been described as walking upright, 6 to 8 feet
- tall, an estimated 300 to 500 pounds and foul smelling.
- Physical evidence in support of its presence includes
- numerous 14-16 inch footprints as well as some controversial
- snapshots and film footage.
-
- Reports have arisen on five continents. In North America, large
- numbers are reported in Pennsylvania as well as western mountain
- states and Canadian provinces. Three hypotheses have been
- offered as to its reality: (1) a type of ape not yet
- documented; (2) the long speculated "missing link" between ape
- and man; and (3) a primal species associated with a visiting
- alien intelligence. There is a persistent relationship between
- Bigfoot reports and UFO sightings.
-
- 44. What do the entities themselves look like? Over four
- decades, witnesses have most commonly described a being of 3 1/2
- to 5 feet in height, very thin with grey-white skin, long arms,
- small hands with four long fingers, and captivating, black,
- almond-shaped eyes.
-
- 45. This likeness, curiously, appeared in a 1989 magazine ad by
- the Performance Products Division of Amoco. The UFO theme has
- likewise been used on television by dozens of major advertisers.
- One must wonder whether corporate America has a stake in
- educating the public about alien visits.
-
- Regardless, by these pictures and accounts, MUFON asserts that
- UFOs are real. Thank you.
